📜 History of Hok Tik Bio Temple Blora
The Hok Tik Bio Temple, located on Gatot Subroto Street, Blora, Central Java, is one of the oldest places of worship in Blora Regency. The name “Hok Tik Bio” literally means “Temple of Earthly Virtue,” reflecting its dedication to the Earth God or Hok Tek Ceng Sin, who is revered as a protector and bringer of blessings.
Established in the early 20th century by the Chinese community that had long settled in Blora, this temple became both a spiritual and social center for the local Chinese descendants. Its founding represents the close relationship between the Chinese community and local culture, as well as their contribution to Blora’s social and economic life.
The temple is part of the Tri Dharma Worship Association (TITD), which embraces three main teachings: Confucianism, Taoism, and Mahayana Buddhism. Inside the temple are various altars and sacred statues (rupang) representing deities from these three traditions, including the Earth God, Kwan Im (Goddess of Mercy), and Kongco Kong Tik Cun Ong.
Over the years, Hok Tik Bio Temple has actively organized numerous religious, social, and cultural activities such as Chinese New Year, Cap Go Meh, and the Mid-Autumn Festival (Tiong Ciu), as well as charity and community events. The temple also welcomes students and the general public to learn about Chinese cultural values through educational visits and traditional art workshops such as Wayang Potehi (Chinese puppet theater) and Karawitan (Javanese gamelan music).
Today, Hok Tik Bio Temple Blora is managed by the TITD Hok Tik Bio Temple Foundation, led by Budilistijo Suboko, with full support from the local community. The temple stands as a living example of how spiritual, cultural, and humanitarian values can coexist harmoniously within Indonesia’s rich diversity.
Hok Tik Bio Temple is not merely a religious building—it is a historical and cultural heritage that deserves to be preserved by all citizens of Blora, regardless of religion or ethnicity.
